New St. George, Utah airport opens today, January 13, 2011

It is an exciting day for St. George and the Zion’s National Park area of Utah. After 20 years of setbacks and controversy, the new St. George airport officially opens today.

The old airport had its charm and a unique experience as planes landed atop a plateau overlooking St. George. But the plateau provided limitations of a short runway and no option for expansion, limiting air service to the region.

The limitations are now things of the past. The new airport is considerably larger, and its runway can accommodate much larger aircraft such as 737’s and bring more services to the area. SkyWest plans to increase services in St. George by 16% tomorrow and another 30% on March 1 when they begin offering daily flights to Los Angeles.
